Tasmania’s Casinos Hit by Cyber-Attack

Two of the four casinos on the Australian province of Tasmania remained shuttered after they were hit by a cyber-attack April 3 that forced the casino operator Federal Group to close them.

The attack was conducted with ransomware. It hit hotel book systems at the Wrest Point and Country Club properties. It also put the “pokies” (slot machines) out of commission.

The Federal Group has begun an internal inquiry and hired cybersecurity experts to assist. With their help, said Federal Group Executive Director Daniel Hanna, the attack was contained. So far, no news on when the casinos will reopen.

Still to be determined is whether any personal financial information—such as credit card transactions—have been compromised. Hanna advised that any comments from any but official sources, “cannot be relied on to provide accurate information.”

Hanna declined to say what ransom was demanded by cyber-attack.
