Texas Voters Could Vote on a Casino

Texas state Rep. Joe Deshotel (l.) wants to promote allowing some coastal counties to allow casinos. Tax money raised would be used to fund insurance for hurricane prone areas.

Texas Voters Could Vote on a Casino

Texas is one of the least-friendly to gaming states in the union. Texas legislator Rep. Joe Deshotel is trying to drum up support for a proposal that would allow some counties in the Lone Star State to offer gaming.

Deshotel’s House Bill 494 would create a pool of money, funded by gaming, to help fund insurance for homeowners in areas hit frequently by hurricanes.

He told ABC13 “The voters will have to make the ultimate decision, but this bill, if passed, would give the voters an opportunity to vote on the casino here in the state of Texas.”

If the bill is passed it would authorize the Texas Lottery Commission to issue six licenses for casinos in Galveston, Jefferson and Nueces counties, which are all along the coast. It would also authorize dog and horse racing in Harris and Bexar counties.
