It is official, the opening of the Oneida Indian Nation’s Yellow Brick Road Casino will open June 2 at 10:00 a.m. The million “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” themed casino has been plagued with controversy since the announcement of the opening. Oz author L. Frank Baum held views calling for the genocide of all Native Americans.
Baum’s family has since issued formal apologies to all Native Americans, separating themselves from the barbaric views, which even the Oneida Nation blames on historical context.
For those who decide to attend the opening, several Oz-themed surprises will await them, as they walk through the doors. The casino itself will have more than 430 slot machines, a 500-seat bingo hall named the Wizard Hall, an Oz general store, and several themed restaurants, bars and lounges.
Dorothy’s farmhouse will offer “there’s no place like home-style” cooking, and patrons will also have food and drink options such as Wicked Good Pizza and the country-western Heart and Courage Saloon. All spots will be for the18+ crowd, with the exception of Wicked Good Pizza, which is family friendly.
