Three Florida Tribes Could Gain Recognition

Three Florida Panhandle tribes−Santa Rosa Band of the Lower Muscogee, Muscogee Nation of Florida and Lower Chattahoochee Band of Yuchi Indians−could gain recognition under state Senator Blaise Ingoglia’s proposed bill.

Three Florida Tribes Could Gain Recognition

Florida state Senator Blaise Ingoglia recently filed SB 1010 which would grant official recognition to the Santa Rosa Band of the Lower Muscogee, the Muscogee Nation of Florida and the Lower Chattahoochee Band of Yuchi Indians. Ingoglia’s measure is similar to a bill introduced in November by state Rep. Michelle Salzman for consideration in the 2024 legislative session.

Ingoglia’s bill said, “State recognition of an Indian tribe or band under this proposed section of law may not be construed to create any basis or authority not otherwise provided by law for an Indian tribe or band to establish or promote any form of otherwise prohibited gaming activity or to claim any interest in land or real estate.”

Florida law includes rules pertaining to the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, including gaming rights, special district powers, hunting, campsites, water rights and identification cards.
