Tiverton Adding Items to Host Community Agreement

A special committee appointed by the city of Tiverton, Rhode Island is working to pack its host community agreement with the Twin River-Tiverton casino with lots of goodies, such as $3 million a year from the developer. Others suggest requiring the casino to pay to pick up litter on nearby streets.

The city of Tiverton, Rhode Island is piling on the items that it would like included in its host community agreement with the developer of the Twin River-Tiverton casino that Twin River is building a stone’s throw from the Massachusetts state line, with the town of Fall River on the other side.

The items include big tickets, like a guarantee of $3 million a year from casino revenues, to a requirement that the casino pay for picking up litter in streets that surround it.

An ad hoc Town Council Casino Subcommittee has been tasked with coming up with ideas for the proposed agreement.

The subcommittee plans to talk to the city’s sewer district and water district about providing service to the casino, something which is more challenging than earlier thought due to inadequate water pressure.

The panel is also looking at requiring that the casino hire and buy local and that fees be charged for impacts to emergency services—and possibly to beautify parts of town, including parks, beaches and streets.

The casino, which Tiverton voters narrowly approved in November, will have 1,000 slots, 32 gaming tables and an 84-room hotel. The casino will build a roundabout to serve the roads that will lead into the facility.

It will replace the casino that Twin River has operated in Newport, the Newport Grand, which will be closed. The developer projects a July 2018 opening.
