Canada’s largest casino, appropriately named the Great Canadian Casino Resort, had its grand opening June 20. The 328,000-square-foot facility is in the Toronto suburb of Rexdale, adjacent to the Woodbine Racetrack.
The cost to build was more than $1 billion and it is billed as one of the largest casino resorts, not only in Canada, but North America.
There are 4,800 slot machines, 145 live table games, VIP rooms, and sports betting kiosks. The casino is open to the public, but the 400-room hotel is not. Nor is the wellness center featuring an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and modern fitness equipment.
Officials for the Great Canadian Casino Resort anticipate the 11-floor hotel will open later this summer. The wellness center should make its debut later this year.
A theater will also open later this summer.
“In the coming months, the property will unveil a state-of-the-art 5,000-person entertainment venue, providing a versatile destination for live music, comedy, sports and special events,” a Great Canadian Entertainment spokesperson said. “Through an exclusive booking partnership with Live Nation, The Theatre at Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto will feature world-class artists to amplify the guest experience.”
The new casino is projected to have an estimated $500 million economic benefit for Ontario.
“We are thrilled to finally unveil Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto to the world,” Matthew Anfinson, CEO of Great Canadian Entertainment, said in a statement. “Our team has worked tirelessly for several years to create an unrivaled entertainment experience that will leave a lasting impression on our guests. The opening of this first phase of Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto is incredibly exciting for all of us, and we are very eager to reveal the next phases, including the hotel and The Theatre, in the coming weeks and months.”
