Tribe Accuse CA’s Newsom of Negotiating in Bad Faith

The Alturas Indian Rancheria has sued California Governor Gavin Newsom, accusing him of negotiating a tribal state gaming compact in bad faith.

In the case, which is being tried in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, the tribe argues that the governor negotiated in bad faith because he didn’t agree to a new compact that was virtually identical to the original. Negotiations are currently stalled. The tribe has asked the court to grant it a summary judgment.

Governor Newsom has sought to have two of the seven claims dismissed. He argues that he was not obligated to agree to the compact that has been in force since 1999.
