Tribe Approves Ohio Land Purchase

A consultant at the brokerage firm for the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma said the tribal council recently approved an agreement to purchase 150 acres of land in Monroe for millions of dollars to build a casino. The tribe would require a gaming compact, and Governor Bob Taft has said he opposes expanded gambling.

The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma is moving toward building a casino in southwestern Ohio, with the recent approval of an agreement to purchase 150 acres of land off Interstate 75 in Monroe, according to Terry Casey, a consultant at the tribe’s brokerage firm, National Capital One.

Casey said the Eastern Shawnee tribal council agreed to the land purchase for millions of dollars, though an exact figure was not given.

Under Ohio law, the casino could offer electronic bingo machines and card games. Eventually, tribal officials want to offer Class III gaming, including blackjack, roulette and other high-stakes games. That would require negotiating a gaming compact with Governor Bob Taft, a Republican who said he opposes expanded gambling in Ohio.
