Atlantic City’s Tropicana Casino Resort has received state approval for a million renovation which includes a new interactive Boardwalk light show.
The New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority—which oversees redevelopment projects in the city—gave the plan final approval. The plan calls for a makeover of the casino’s Boardwalk facade, upgrades to 434 guest rooms in its North Tower and the construction of a new fitness center and retail attractions.
Officials noted that plans to transform Tropicana’s Boardwalk facade into an interactive light and sound display with 15, 17-foot high video screens is exactly the type of attraction the city needs to encourage.
“It’s a pretty terrific lighting, audio and sound proposal,” said Atlantic City Mayor Donald Guardian, who sits on the CRDA’s board.
The display will include the five high-definition video screens with moving strobe lights as well as an LED light and video “column” that will rise 66 feet into the air. The casino’s North and South hotel towers will be bathed in color-changing lights.
The new two-story fitness center will offer 12,000 square feet of workout space. North Tower hotel rooms will be refurbished with a modern design, new lighting and expansive bathrooms. In addition, Tropicana will convert 10,000 square feet of underutilized space into four new retail locations, casino officials said.
“We are always looking for innovative ways to offer Tropicana guests more fun, value and variety,” Tropicana CEO Tony Rodio said in a statement. “These significant architectural investments will introduce a fresh impetus and appeal to Atlantic City, extending Tropicana’s brand of excitement right out onto the Boardwalk and on the street.”
