The owner of Macau’s New Century Hotel in Taipa, home of the shuttered Greek Mythology Casino, has submitted an application to redevelop the site.
According to a proposal published by the government’s Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau, the project would include new construction on the ground floor of the 14,900-square-meter property and the addition of two new buildings.
Formerly known as Beijing Imperial Palace Hotel, the site has been embroiled for years in operational problems and ownership disputes that date back years and erupted in violence on more than one occasion.
The hotel and casino were run by separate and reputedly competing entities. Hong Kong-listed gaming investor Amax International also lodged a claim on ownership when the government ordered the property closed in 2016 for “serious administrative irregularities which constitute threats to public safety.” Officials revoked the hotel’s license the following year.
Last year, the property was again in the news after Amax claimed that junket giant Suncity Group had illegally seized control of it in a dispute over ownership and obtained a judgment in court ordering Suncity to vacate.
Amax, which held a 24.8 percent in Greek Mythology, pulled out earlier this year, selling its stake to a Macau investment firm, Fu Po International, for a mere HK$38,000, the equivalent of US$4,750.
