Twin River Unconcerned About Mashpee Tribal Casino

Twin River appears to be unperturbed that the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe has been given permission by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to put land in Taunton, Massachusetts into trust for a casino. This development will not affect is plans to build a “convenience” casino in Tiverton, according to the company.

The plans by the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe to build a 0 million casino in Taunton, Massachusetts now that the federal government has put that land into trust has “no bearing” on Twin River to build a “convenience casino” in Tiverton, Rhode Island, a few hundred feet from the states’ common border.

That was the word from Patti Doyle, spokesman for Twin River, which unveiled its proposal for Tiverton last April. The Tiverton casino has always been planned as a way of countering the threat of casinos in the Bay State, and to protect Rhode Island’s third largest generator of income for the state government.

The plan is to move the current Newport Grand slots parlor, where the community has resisted adding table games and more slots, and relocate to Tiverton, adding more machines.

Doyle told Rhode Island Public Radio that the border convenience casino would be “the best opportunity to preserve and enhance” the state’s gaming revenue.
