Two Indian Casinos Mull Marijuana Dispensaries

Two gaming tribes are considering opening marijuana dispensaries near their casinos. The plans of Foxwoods Resort Casino and Harrah’s Cherokee Casino were chronicled by a website devoted to cannabis.

Two Indian Casinos Mull Marijuana Dispensaries

Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut and Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort in North Carolina are both mulling opening pot dispensaries, according to an article on Leafly, a website devoted to cannabis use and education.

The article said the casinos are both considering dispensaries of at least 25,000 square feet, and including consumption lounges and drive-through windows.

Cherokee government affairs liaison Jeremey Wilsons said the dispensary would likely be called Kituwah Medical. A site hasn’t been chosen yet, although it could be a bingo hall that closed last year due to Covid and never reopened.

Foxwoods, owned by the Mashantucket Pequot nation, is considering a dispensary that would be about half a mile from the casino, amidst a shopping mall, dining and golf.

Connecticut has already legalized the retail sale of cannabis with a state-issued license and a law that would approve of medical marijuana is being considered by the North Carolina legislature. Being sovereign, however, the Cherokee don’t have to wait for that law to begin selling the product.
