Two Iowa Casinos Fined For Violations

Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino was fined $20,000 by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission for allowing a 19-year old to gamble and drink alcohol. It was the casino's second incident in a year. William Hill, which manages simulcast operations at Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs, paid a $5,000 penalty for two violations this spring.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission recently fined Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino and William Hill, which runs the simulcast operations at Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs, for violations.

Prairie Meadows was fined $20,000 for allowing a 19-year-old to gamble and drink alcohol there earlier this year. “There was a situation in April where a minor had entered the gaming floor unchallenged two times and was on the gaming floor for over an hour and gambled,” said IRGC Administrator Brian Ohorilko.

He said, “For Prairie Meadows, this was the second incident in the last 365 days.” In July 2018, a 20-year old woman entered the casino without being asked to show identification, and proceeded to drink alcohol and gamble there for three hours, Ohorilko said. “If there would happen to be a third violation, those fines would escalate” to $30,000, he said.

William Hill, which runs the simulcast operations at Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs, had two violations in the spring. Ohorilko said.

“Commission staff had identified that America Wagering did not upload names from the statewide exclusion list into their list that they use to screen patrons. The rules require that that list is updated once every seven days. So, in this particular situation, that did not happen on two occasions. William Hill agreed to a penalty in the amount of $5,000, and this was their first offense for this type of incident in the past year.”
