Two Vegas Locals Take Reins at SLS

SLS Las Vegas has named Station Casinos veteran Terry Downey (l.) president of the Strip hotel casino. Downey quit the Aliante in North Las Vegas after its purchase by Boyd Gaming earlier this year. Joining him at SLS is Robert Schaffhauser, who was Aliante’s CFO.

SLS Las Vegas has tapped two local gaming executives to take charge of the 1,300-room resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

Terry Downey and Robert Schaffhauser, both of whom quit the Aliante in North Las Vegas when it was acquired by Boyd Gaming earlier this year, have been named president and COO and chief financial officer, respectively, SLS announced.

Downey, a 15-year veteran of Station Casinos, where he oversaw multiple properties, replaces Scott Kreeger, who announced last month he was taking a position with a gaming company out of state. Schaffhauser, who worked in finance roles for Colony Resorts LVH Acquisitions and Trump Hotels & Casinos, was most recently Aliante’s CFO.

“Terry and Bob bring a tremendous amount of experience and insight to SLS Las Vegas,’’ said Terry Fancher, executive managing director of SLS owner, San Francisco-based Stockbridge Capital Partners. “They will apply their valuable expertise to maximizing the potential of this rejuvenated and historic property.”

The SLS opened in August 2014 at the old Sahara and is still working through some growing pains. Last year, the property expanded with a live entertainment venue, The Foundry, and converted an existing hotel tower to a 289-room W in partnership with Marriott International

“Bob and I are excited about the opportunities at SLS Las Vegas,’’ Downey said. “It’s an impressive resort with unrealized potential, and we’re eager to work with Stockbridge to unlock that potential.’’
