The top four U.K. sportsbooks have pledged £100 million (US$124.2 million) to support responsible gambling treatment, according to the industry trade group, the Betting and Gaming Council.
The funding—backed by bet365, Flutter Entertainment, GVC Holdings and William Hill—will be sent to GambleAware, which will disburse the funds to agencies that provide counseling and other treatments.
The funds are part of the operators’ 2019 pledge to increase research, education and treatment by expanding contributions from 0.1 percent to 1 percent over the next five years, according to SBCNews.
“GambleAware has a long track record in commissioning treatment services and working with providers for the benefit of problem gamblers,” said Peter Jackson, CEO of Flutter Entertainment. “Through the provision of this unprecedented level of financial support, we aim to achieve a step-change in the treatment and counseling available to those experiencing gambling-related harm.”
In addition, £2.5 million will be given to YGAM and GamCare’s new educational programs during this financial year.
BGC Chief Executive Michael Dugher said the funding shows the industry’s efforts to improve problem gambling treatment. “As the new body representing the industry, we are committed to driving up standards,” he said.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said problem gambling can damage people’s mental health and affect the lives of those around them.
“I’m delighted the Betting and Gaming Council is taking these steps to support treatment and provision for problem gamblers,” he said.
