UK gaming regulators have approved a self-exclusion system that allows problem gamblers to block themselves from online betting sites.
According to the Guardian newspaper, the introduction of Gamstop was delayed 18 months when the Remote Gambling Association (RGA) found flaws in the system, including loopholes that allowed gamblers to bypass self-imposed blocks.
In addition, the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) was concerned that Gamstop did not synchronize its list of registered users with companies’ promotional mailing lists, meaning self-excluded gamblers would still receive direct marketing emails.
With those issues apparently resolved, the newspaper reported, all UK gaming companies will be required to sign up to Gamstop as a condition of their licenses to operate.
