Workers can apply at sister property
The Grosvenor Casino in Southsea, Portsmouth, U.K., will reportedly close August 9, taking with it about 50 jobs. According to the Portsmouth News, workers will be encouraged to apply for jobs elsewhere in the company; operator the Rank Group also owns a casino in Gunwharf Quays, also in Portsmouth.
“I feel let down,” one employee told the News. “This casino still makes a profit but because they have another casino in town they will cut overheads and still not lose any business. We will get a week’s pay for every full year we have been with the company up to 10 years.”
Local Councillor Hugh Mason said, “I regret the closure of anything which brings business to that part of Southsea. It has restaurants and bars and I think the casino, whilst many people objected to it in one way or another, has brought business to Southsea. I think the building has potential for other uses.”
But Councillor Linda Symes is less optimistic about the future of the site. “I struggle to see how anyone could convert it,” she said. “The thought of it being pulled down is horrendous.”
