UK Commission Warns About Holiday Lotteries

The UK Gambling Commission is warning organizations that may be hold charitable gaming, such as raffles and tombolas for the holidays, to hold them within the law. If they don’t they will be prosecuted.

The Great Britain Gambling Commission has warned organizations running charity lottery games during the Christmas holidays to act within the law to avoid being prosecuted.

The panel noted that the number of lotteries and related charity gambling, such as raffles and tombolas, increases during the holidays, but they must only be held for charity and not for private gain.

They also need to get a license from the commission or register with the municipality where the activity is being held. There are limits on how much an organization can spend on tickets sales for a single prize, but no limit on donations.

Businesses operating lotteries for customers may not do it for profit or charity. All the money must go into prizes or expenses, said the commission.
