Ukraine Cracks Down on Illegal Gambling Sites

The Ukrainian Gambling Commission has joined forces with the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) to crack down on 433 illegal gambling sites, Yogonet reported May 31.

This is the latest in an ongoing campaign to curtail illegal and unregulated online gaming in the East European country.

National Center for Operational and Technical Management of Telecommunications Networks of the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine, which provides secure communications to the government, May 23 published Order No. 415/2220. This requires internet and other electronic services providers to block access to illegal domains.

Previously the Gambling Commission and SSU ordered providers to limit access to nearly 600 domain names connected to illicit gambling. Its efforts in this direction have been accelerating since the beginning of the year.

In addition, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine introduced a total temporary ban on advertising of gambling games and bookmakers. It will be in force until a new law, being discussed by Ukrainian lawmakers, is approved to fight gambling addiction.

The Cabinet of Ministers amended a resolution that addresses “Some issues of countering the negative consequences caused by gambling games operation on the Internet.” This resolution would limit where casinos and bookmakers may advertise.
