Upstate New York Casinos Seek Tax Breaks

Three New York casino developers say hefty property tax breaks will help them compete with casinos developed in Orange County. Orange County is closer to the New York City metropolitan area, and could siphon off patrons who otherwise would travel upstate.

Nevele Resorts looks for 0 million in tax breaks??

At least three New York casino developers are seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks for planned upstate gaming halls. They say such financial incentives would help them compete with casinos built closer to New York City.??

Michael Treanor, CEO of Nevele Resorts, a proposed casino in the Catskill Mountains, is seeking $100 million in tax breaks over 15 years. Treanor told Capital New York that his company’s planned $640 million casino in Ellenville, Ulster County would have a harder time attracting customers if the state grants a license to a casino in Orange County.

??“We have to fight much harder in order to get people to come up to the Nevele,” Treanor said. “If you want to put a casino within an hour or 45 minutes of New York City—they’ll be able to print money in Orange County.”

Of a total of 17 proposals, there are six bids to develop casinos in Orange County.
