The government of Uruguay seeks international investors to help it renovate the Hotel Casino Carmelo into a five-star hotel casino.
Minister of Tourism German Cardoso said in a statement, “I’m an optimistic man and I know we’ll come out of this situation very soon. This Department has many projects.” The casino, he said, has already gotten “the green light” from President Lois Lacalle Pou.
The ministry is working on a “Call for International Interest” to seek bidders.
The goal is to help the country return to the level of tourism it enjoyed before the pandemic.
The government has also approved a second casino project in Rocha that would include a 150 room hotel and convention center.
