Uruguay’s Senate has passed a bill that will allow the government to keep more of what gamblers win.
The new law, which must also be OK’d by the executive branch, will add to the tax on prizes won in games offered by Banco de Quinielas, a government-licensed private firm that administers Uruguay’s lotteries. Lawmakers hope to raise US$17.3 million with the tax.
There are 16 casinos in Uruguay, three in Punta del Este, including the Conrad Casino Hotel.
