Vegas Global Business District Delayed

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority will hire a third party to help oversee the massive $2.3 billion Global Business District project. A newly formed committee has delayed to hire the project for at least another month though.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority board of directors voted to delay the hiring of a third-party owner representative who will oversee the Las Vegas Global Business District project. Sacramento-based Cordell Corp. and their hiring will be discussed in the April meeting.

During the meeting, the board also formed a six-member committee to consider issues, which include the acquisition of the Riviera Hotel and Casino, its demolition, and 750,000 square feet of new convention space. The committee will consist of three private industry representatives and three elected officials.

The delay of Cordell’s hiring is due to the board choosing to review the authority’s proposed multimillion-dollar contract. Initially, the board will spend $270,000 – 450,000 a month for the first phase of the project. The second phase, which will take an additional four to seven years, will be negotiated separately.

Initially, the Global Business District was to be developed while convention authority executives supervised the execution. However, due to the projects mass expansion, the board has decided to hire a company who specializes in such projects. Some facilities Cordell has worked on include Levi’s stadium in San Francisco, Sporty Authority Field at Mile High, Fenway Park, and stadium expansions at the University of Michigan’s Big House, Oregon State University and Ohio State University.

The board is also expected to help the LVCVA obtain federal grants on the projects while also representing the city’s interest on visa programs, open-skies agreements and issues regarding tourism.
