The 2023-2024 NFL season is less than a month away, and that means that Las Vegas bookmakers are preparing for another year of season-long handicapping contests, which have become a fan favorite for the most die-hard bettors.
All the contests of course represent some form of risk, but no bookmaker in the city is facing more potential overlays—or money that must be injected into prize pools to meet advertised figures and compensate for any differences in entry fees—than downtown’s Circa Sports.
This year, Circa is advertising a record $14 million in prize guarantees for its two main contests, the Circa Survivor and the Circa Million V. Survivor has $8 million in prizes and Million V has $6 million.
As of August 21, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Survivor had a total of 3,856 entries out of a total of 8,000 and Million V had 2,190 out of a total of 6,000. Based on entry fee calculations, that means that Circa is currently looking at a combined overlay of just under $8 million unless more entries come in.
According to the Review-Journal, the company has already paid over $3 million to cover overlays from the last two seasons.
With regard to the Survivor contest, Circa owner Derek Stevens told the newspaper that he was confident about its success, asserting that the company is “on a pretty good pace to surpass ($8 million).”
“The Circa Million, we’re pacing better than last year but there’s still a chance for an overlay,” Stevens told the Review-Journal. “That’s where the value is.”
