Veracruz Governor Opposes Azteca Casino

Miguel Angel Yunes Linares, governor of Veracruz, Mexico, has blocked a TV Azteca casino in Yanga municipality.

Yanga is in one of the most economically depressed areas in Mexico. Local government officials and the Veracruz Coordination Group, a task force of officials that includes state and federal police advised the governor against the casino at that location.

Several weeks ago it became known that the Interior Ministry had granted TV Azteca a 25-year license to operate a casino and offer online gaming. The documentation specifies that the casino be located in the Veracruz downtown, at a current auto parts retail shop.

Yunes said the area is a high crime area. After a meeting of the task force he declared, “Veracruz requires more universities, more schools, more sports centers, more parks, more institutions in which young people are shown a good path. We do not require casinos; we do not want casinos in Veracruz.”

TV Azteca is a multimedia conglomerate owned by Grupo Salinas, which is itself a conglomerate of several Mexican companies.
