A 60-year-old senior police officer in Vietnam was arrested March 11 on charges that he was part of an international gambling ring.

According to Asia Gaming Brief, Major General Nguyen Thanh Hoa, former head of the Ministry of Public Security’s high-technology department has been charged with being an organizer for gambling events.

“This is a particularly large scale case, using high technology, especially serious, complex and sensitive, involving many people, many sectors and provinces, involving officials within the police,” said a statement from the Secretariat.

Hoa had already been suspended from his position in 2017 due to the allegations. The gambling ring has an estimated 8 million players, with an average of three accounts per player, AGB reported.
