Vietnam Could Expand Casino Pilot Program

Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance has reportedly asked the government’s Party Personnel Committee to extend locals gambling at the Corona Resort & Casino to 2024, and also to add two new casinos to the pilot program.

The program, first announced in 2017, was originally set to run for three years, from 2019 to 2021, involving two casinos where Vietnamese could gamble. But that plan was hampered by the Covid-19 pandemic. Only Corona in Phú Quốc is currently open to nationals. The second designated casino, in the rural district of Van Don in Quang Ninh Province, has yet to open, reports Vietnam.net.

The ministry also wants locals to be permitted to play at casinos in Da Nang City and Khanh Hoa Province. Its figures show that the Phu Quoc casino has welcomed more than 240,000 players as of December 31, 2021; of those, 65.5 percent were Vietnamese locals. Accumulated revenue since opening was VND3.22 trillion (US$138 million) with generated taxes of VND1.73 trillion (US$74 million).
