The Ministry of Finance in Vietnam has prepared a decree which will add 27 leagues and tournaments to the list of allowed football events citizens can wager on. The list includes Europe’s major leagues, the Champions League and Europe League, AFC Cup and Copa America, according to Inside Asian Gaming. It would also permit bets on matches in which Vietnam participates, such as World Cup qualifiers, the Olympics, Asian Cup, AFC U-23 Championship and U-20 World Cup.
Under existing regulations, Vietnamese can only bet on overseas tournaments officially sanctioned by FIFA, which means no English Premier League and Spain’s La Liga among other popular leagues.
Another rule which limits minimum and maximum wagers for football matches, horse races and dog races did not change.
The proposed changes come in the wake of accusations regulations spurred a rise in illegal football betting during the recent EURO 2020 championships in Europe and the Copa America in Brazil.
Vietnam legalized sports betting in 2017 as a five-year pilot program, similar to a three-year pilot which permitted locals to gamble at particular casinos.
