Vietnam and China have agreed to work together in the fight against cross-border gambling. The agreement was made when Nguyen Phu Trong, general secretary of Vietnam’s Communist Party, made an official visit to Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this month.
According to GGRAsia, the nations issued a joint statement promising to cooperate in the matter, and also partner to battle “terrorism, drug crime, cybercrime, human trafficking and high-tech crime,” as well as the “tracing of wanted criminals” and “color revolution.” The latter term was coined by China to describe protests in Hong Kong.
The joint statement further included an agreement to promote tourism, but noted that such effort would have to be in line with the two countries’ “pandemic prevention policy.”
In recent years, the Chinese government under Xi has cracked down on cross-border gambling, including people from China who travel overseas to gamble, or those who gambling illegally online. China’s amended criminal code, which took effect in March 2021, makes it a crime for anyone to partake in or help others engage in these forms of illegal betting.
