Virgin Casino Goes Online in New Jersey Without Poker

Virgin Casino was one of the last of New Jersey’s 14 online gambling sites to make a real push for players. But Virgin officials for the site say that since the early revenue has been about poker—which the site doesn’t offer—they expect to find a comfortable niche in the market.

Virgin Casino’s online site in New Jersey was one of the last to start competing in the state, but Gamesys—which operates the site—expects to make a mark in the state with its casino games.

Buoyed by online poker, the Borgata Casino Hotel & Spa and Caesars Interactive have dominated the early market in the state gaining 72 percent of revenue between them.  But Lee Fenton, CEO of Gamesys, tells NorthJersey.com that Virgin is going to make its paly.

“I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t think we could challenge them,” Fenton told the website. “Will it be easy? No, because Borgata and Caesars clearly are formidable opponents with a good set of operations in New Jersey. We’ll do our best to offer unique customer service and marketing that Virgin is known for.”

Virgin is partnered with the Tropicana Casino & Resort. Though both offer casino games sites and were online when the state first went live with online gaming November 26, they have only recently begun a public marketing campaign.

Fenton said that geolocation and payment processing issues meant it made more sense to delay a public campaign.

“They have certainly improved, although they’re not near where we’d like them to be,” Fenton told the website. “Some of it is just customer messaging on what to do to get through.”

Fenton also said that since Virgin focuses on slots and casino table games, as opposed to poker, they are trying to attract a different type of player.

“Poker is a different liquidity game, where you have customers arriving all the time who want a game at the price they want to play at,” Fenton said. “Poker is a different animal in that regard.”

Still, Fenton acknowledged that more players means larger jackpots at casino games sites.

Virgin Casino’s  more than 30 online games offer a mix of some United Kingdom favorites as well as other played in Atlantic City casinos, he said. One game called “Atlantic City blackjack” is doing “extraordinarily well,” Fenton told the website.

Other games offered on the virgin site and Tropicana site include roulette, keno, video poker, baccarat, and Pai Gow.
