Visitation Rebounds at RW Malaysia

Malaysia’s Resorts World Genting (l.) has regained more than half its pre-Covid visitation levels, though it’s only been a few weeks since it reopened.

In the first few weeks since reopening, Malaysia’s Resorts World Genting has regained more than 50 percent of its typical customer traffic, and also seen casino operations rebound at a similar pace.

According to Inside Asian Gaming, a research note from financial services firm CGS-CIMB, Resorts World, which started reopening in phases starting on June 19, has increased its available hotel room capacity from 2,000 to 4,000 “to cater to the higher demand.”

Operator Genting Malaysia has reported that its SkyCasino and Genting Grand casinos are also back to 50 percent of normal capacity. The casinos are currently open only to members.

“Typically, some 70 percent to 80 percent of Resorts World’s visitor arrivals are locals, and there has been pent-up demand for domestic tourism and gaming,” the firm said. “Hence, we believe RWG’s business will perform better than other casinos in the region that are more dependent on international visitors.”

Both the mass and VIP gaming segments have shown strength, CGS-CIMB said, with the inability to travel allowing RWG to capture demand from local VIP players.
