Western Australia Ends Casino Cruise Ban

A ban on casino cruises off the shores of Western Australia has been lifted, according to Tourism Minister Paul Papalia (l.). Under the new rules, the cruise ships must still remain 12 nautical miles from land.

100 passengers minimum

The government of Western Australia will allow casino cruise boats to operate offshore provided they remain 12 nautical miles from land, carry at least 100 passengers and be in transit to or from other destinations, either overseas or interstate.

Under a previous agreement, cruise ships were required to close down their casino when they entered WA waters, said Terry Waldron of the state’s Racing and Gaming Authority.

“Cruise shipping is a vital part of WA’s tourism industry, bringing in millions of dollars to the State’s economy annually and creating jobs,” said Tourism Minister Paul Papalia as he announced the news.

He said the state is committed to growing the local cruise ship industry to stoke tourism, reported Yogonet.com.
