White Earth Nation Casino Meetings Coming

The White Earth Nation announced last September it would start construction on a third Shooting Star Casino this year. However, the tribe has not made a formal construction proposal and county officials plan to hold a series of public meetings about the casino, although no dates have been set.

A series of public meetings will take place in the near future regarding the White Earth Nation’s proposed third Shooting Star Casino in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. No locations or dates have been set, said county Director of Tourism and Economic Development Nick Leonard, who noted the meetings could be heated. The casino would be developed on 270 acres with 5,000 feet of lake access, and operated under Shooting Start Casino, Hotel and Entertainment Company.

Last September, the company announced construction could start this year and be completed in 2017. “We don’t have a formal proposal here at the county,” Leonard said.

In the meantime he stated the county aims to work with White Earth Nation, Star Lake Homeowners Association and Star Lake Township to create a “Limited Comprehensive Plan.” He explained the plan would detail “what those opportunities and potential impacts could be. So we’re going to be looking at everything from transportation to housing, recreation, environmental certainly.”
