Wisconsin’s Oneida Nation Preps For Sports Betting

The Oneida Nation of Wisconsin hopes to open a temporary sportsbook at its Oneida Casino in Green Bay by September 12, the day the Green Bay Packers kick off the 2021 National Football League season against the New Orleans Saints. All the tribe needs is approval from the U.S. Department of the Interior. Tribal officials and Governor Tony Evers signed an updated gaming compact allowing sports betting on July 1 and submitted it to Interior on July 2. Approval of the compact is expected by August 16.

The temporary sportsbook, under construction at the Oneida Casino, will feature betting windows and self-service kiosks. College betting is permitted, with the exception of hometown teams like the University of Wisconsin. However, Wisconsin residents will be allowed to wager on the Emmys and Oscars and similar events.

As yet, none of Wisconsin’s other two-dozen-plus tribes have announced sports betting deals with the state.

Currently statewide mobile betting is not allowed, as federal law states gaming tribes cannot offer bets outside their own property. Oneida tribal leaders are waiting to see the outcome of the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s lawsuit against the Interior Department; the tribe’s new compact states it can offer statewide mobile betting since its online servers will be located on reservation land.
