World Series of Poker Gets Under Way

The 45th annual World Series of Poker is underway, starting off with an employee tournament and encompassing 65 events from now until the Main Event championship beginning July 5. For the first time, the Main Event carries a $10 million first prize guarantee.

Cards are in the air for the 45th annual World Series of at the Rio casino hotel In Las Vegas. The WSOP includes 65 events from now until July 5, when the ,000 buy-in championship main event begins.

The championship runs July 5 to July 14. The final nine players then return in November to play for the championship.

The main event is offering a guarantee of at least $10 million this year to the winner, a first for the WSOP. The guarantee celebrates the WSOP’s 10th year at the Rio.

Highlights include:

The Big One for One Drop. The $1 million buy-in tournament starts June 29. A full field of 56 players is expected.

The “Millionaire Maker” returns to the schedule. The $1,000 buy-in tournament will begin May 31 and will award at least $1 million to the winner.

Final tables from events will be streamed with five- or 30-minute delays on WSOP.com.

ESPN’s coverage of the WSOP begins July 29 with the Big One for One Drop tournament, and the Main Event will be shown starting Sept. 28 for seven consecutive Sunday nights leading into the “November Nine” final table.
