WSOP Debates Fate of 2020 Tourney

The World Series of Poker has yet to decide whether to keep the tournament on schedule six weeks from now, move it to a later date or hold it online.

WSOP Debates Fate of 2020 Tourney

Despite the success of moving live World Series of Poker events online, the 2020 World Series of Poker land-based tournament has yet to be cancelled.

Moving it to a later date has problems of its own. WSOP Europe can’t happen prior to a re-scheduled Las Vegas event. And the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino site would likely be unavailable either, according to CalvinAyre.com.

Holding it online seems the most viable option. With over a dozen online events already set pre-coronavirus, adding more should be easy to accomplish. But an online only option would leave thousands of WSOP workers without two months of employment.

And for players, winning a virtual competition isn’t the same as lifting a WSOP bracelet in the ‘Thunderdome’ under the lights of ESPN in front of viewers from all over the world.

But if the WSOP were to wait for restrictive measures to be lowered and then people at the competition got infected, then that leaves a bad stain.
