Wyoming Approves Sportsbook Rules

The Wyoming Gaming Commission August 2 unanimously approved sports betting rule, moving the state further along towards its goal of taking sports wagers before the September 9 opening of the NFL season.

The vote was taken after two days of public comment.

The rules approved addressed issues such as licenses, taxation and requirements for sportsbook operators. The rules need to be published far and wide by September 1.

Officials want to accelerate the approvals in order to make the deadlines. Wyoming will become the second state to allow unlimited online sportsbook operators (aka an uncapped market), with Tennessee being the first. There are no brick and mortar casinos in the state. Hence the online form that the market will take. There is a minimum of five licenses.

The Cowboy State is also an outlier in that it allows bets from 18 years or older, instead of the age limit of 21 that most states maintain. It is also the first state to allow wagers in digital, virtual and cryptocurrencies.

In April Wyoming became the first state of 2021 to pass a sports betting law.
