Wyoming Casino Touts its Economic Impact

Wind River Casino, owned by the Northern Arapaho Tribe of Wyoming has donated more than $1 million over ten years to youth activities, including a school backpack giveaway. Casino Marketing Director Jackie Dorothy shared details of the donations last week to the Riverton City Council.

The talk was reported by the Gillette News Record.

That translates into thousands of backpacks for students in grades K-12. The casino has also had a positive impact on unemployment on the Wind River Reservation, said Dorothy. It dropped from 80 percent to 40 percent since the casino opened.

One way the casino also impacts lives is by requiring drug and alcohol testing for employees. The casino, which once had a zero tolerance policy, has transitioned to requiring counseling. Once employees complete the program they are put back to work.

This has led to a “better than average” success rate, said Dorothy.
