Zynga Founder Resigns Chief Product Officer Post

Zynga founder Mark Pincus (l.) is stepping down as the company’s chief product officer, but will remain chairman of the company.

Online game maker Zynga’s founder Mark Pincus is resigning as chief product officer.

The move comes less than a year after he was replaced as the company’s CEO and as the company’s sales continue to falter. Pincus, who founded the company in 2007, will remain chairman of the company’s board.

Zynga scored successes on Facebook with games such as Farmville and Mafia Wars, but has been losing ground recently to competitors and a migration away from Facebook by gamers to other games found on mobile devices. The company has been cutting jobs and posting profit losses.

Don Mattrick, who had been in charge of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment division, replaced Pincus as CEO in July.

Pincus said he plans to focus on investing in new products.

“I am going to invest in ideas that I think can be breakthrough products, and I don’t feel any burning need to go out and start a company,” Pincus told the website Recode. “I want to do things that are more organic, because that’s where Zynga started.”

Zynga also announced several new executive hires, including Alex Garden—formerly of Microsoft—as president of Zynga Studios.
