Argentine Government Demands More Control over Casinos

The government of Argentina wants more oversight on the casinos that operate in its capital city of Buenos Aires, including the Princess (l.) in Puerto Madero. It just released new rules that crack down on financial reporting.

The Argentine government has issued a new rule requiring that casino operators publish financial results of their online casinos. The decree by the Argentine National Lottery is designed to further bring under the control of the Buenos Aires government the racino located under the Palermo racetrack as well as what the government calls “floating casinos” the “Estrella de la Fortuna” and “Princess,” in Puerto Madero.

According to a statement by the lottery, “Both the information provided by operators and the information obtained by The National Lottery within the framework of inspections carried out, or via the capturing through electronic interconnection online, falls in the public domain so it should be made fully available to the public.”

In May the government shut down 88 slot machines on the “floating” casinos and 94 in Palermo because they failed to meet safety requirements. Before that a surprise inspection of one of the “floating” casinos was made to look at financial records.

In 2015 the government decided not to renew the National Lottery’s contract with the capital city and to take over direct regulation of the casinos.
