The South Jersey Transportation Authority has voted to continue a package of subsidies to attract carriers to Atlantic City International Airport despite several failed attempts to increase service to the resort.
The incentives include waiving airport fees and up to $60,000 for marketing new service. The package will be offered to airlines for two years, according to the Press of Atlantic City.
In order to be eligible for the incentives package an airline must provide two nonstop flights per week. The authority also is offering as much as $40,000 in marketing incentives for a seasonal service, according to the resolution.
The authority has been trying to attract carriers to the airport for several years, but Spirit Airlines remains the airport’s only carrier. Carriers that have taken advantage of the program include United Airlines, Choice Aire and Air Canada, but all of them cancelled service due to a lack of customers.
Air Canada did offer seasonal service in 2015, and it’s unclear if they will offer the service again this summer.
All told, the authority has given out $5.6 million in subsidies since 2009, according to the Press.
