Atlantic City Boardwalk to Get Video Surveillance System

The New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority will fund an $11 million project to install 230 surveillance cameras on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. The project is being called the first of its kind for a New Jersey boardwalk.

Atlantic City’s Boardwalk will get 230 surveillance cameras as part of an million project to increase safety in the resort.

The New Casino Reinvestment Authority approved issuing about $11 million in bonds to fund installation of the cameras over the winter and spring, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

The plan calls for sixty cameras stationed on poles where beach blocks intersect with the Boardwalk that will be monitored by police and other public-safety personnel. Another set of about 170 cameras would be installed on the digital-display poles used for Boardwalk advertising.

Those 170 cameras would also be used for public safety, but they would also be accessible to NeXomedia which operates the digital displays. The firm wants gather demographic information about Boardwalk crowds for commercial use, the Press reported.

The project is “the first of its kind in this state” on a boardwalk, said David Rebuck, head of the state Division of Gaming Enforcement said the project is the first of its kind in the state, which has several seaside resorts with boardwalks.

The cameras are part of a $33 million initiative to improve Boardwalk infrastructure. The project has included installation of LED lighting, Wi-Fi equipment and cellphone charging stations on the walkway, according to the Press report.
