Bahamas: The Nanny Nation?

Charges of discrimination have been leveled against the Bahamian government, which continues to uphold a ban on casino visitation by residents of the island nation. But Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe says the casinos are there for visitors, not locals.

Non-islanders will be banned from webshops

Bahamian Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe says a law that prohibits residents from patronizing the island nation’s casinos are a way to protect the country’s integrity, and will remain in effect.

Wilchcombe also said foreigners will not banned from participating in webshop gaming once the industry is regulated, reported the Bahamas Tribune.

Defending the casino ban, Wilchcombe said, “The truth is that this is a system that’s been going on now for many decades. It was all for the growth of our country. We have to remember that when casinos were agreed to, they were agreed to as an amenity for the tourism industry. That’s what it is right now. That’s what I intend for it to remain for the moment because that’s what’s expected.”

Legislation to regulate webshop or storefront gaming was slated to be in place last week, with regulation to take effect before the end of the month. The government has said that taxes on the sector will be retroactive to July 1, the Tribune reported.
