Belleville, Ontario Mayor Taso Christopher said last week that he is confident that a proposal to build a casino in the city will be brought to the council as early as January 25.
The casino of around 30,000 square feet would be proposed by Ontario Gaming East Ltd., which was recently awarded operations for Eastern Ontario casinos by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation. The company oversees two other casinos in the eastern part of the province.
Christopher told the council that the Ontario government and the Lottery are now vetting the proposal. Once the city signs the agreement, he said, groundbreaking could happen within two months.
Christopher said, “We’ve been waiting for 12 or 13 years,” and added that several sites within the city are zoned such that they could host a casino.
