Bermuda To Amend Singapore Model

Bermuda has no casinos, but the Casino Gaming Commission intends to amend the Singapore model for casino gambling, which it adopted in 2014, to make it more appropriate to the “social, cultural and economic realities of Bermuda," said Minister of Tourism Development & Transport Shawn Crockwell (l.). Bermuda law allows up to three casinos.

Bermuda Minister of Tourism Development & Transport Shawn Crockwell recently told members of the House of Assembly that the Bermuda Casino Gaming Commission will amend the Singapore model for casino gambling, which the Bermuda government adopted in 2014. Crockwell said the amendments will help make the legislation more appropriate to the “social, cultural and economic realities of Bermuda.”

The changes are anticipated before any casino opens in Bermuda, which two years ago approved up to three gaming venues in hotels. Last year the Casino Gaming Amendment Bill was drafted and sent to legislators, detailing the site selection process and how landowners can apply for a casino to be developed on a designated location.

Crockwell also told lawmakers, “Over the course of the past seven months the gaming commission members have been steadily acclimatizing themselves with the full scope of their duties and responsibilities as commission members, in addition to undertaking and completing the various tasks associated with the recruitment of key commission personnel and the actual setup of the commission offices.”
