Brazilian President Supports Casino Legalization

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro (l.) supports a bill introduced by Senator Ciro Nogueira to allow casinos to reopen. It has been a misdemeanor to operate casinos for 80 years. Brazil’s hotels support the change.

Brazilian President Supports Casino Legalization

President Jair Bolsonaro, and Economy Minister Paulo Guedes have indicated support of legalizing casinos in Brazil. Senator Ciro Nogueira has introduced a bill that would immediately legalize gaming as a way to boost the hotel industry.

Currently casinos in the country, called jogo do bicho, operate in the shadows and a court case is taking up the issue of whether games of chance are criminal. The misdemeanor law dates back 80 years.

The Las Vegas Sand Corp. is lobbying the government in favor of legalization.
