California Tribe, City of Temecula Reach Deal on Expansion

The city of Temecula, California and the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians, who operate Pechanga Resort & Casino (l.) have reached an intergovernmental agreement in which the tribe has agreed to pay $5 million for roadwork and pay for an additional police officer.

The Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, in Temecula, Riverside County has reached an intergovernmental agreement with the city to pay million in roadwork and fund an additional police officer, all in mitigation for its 5 million expansion of the Pechanga Resort & Casino.

Groundbreaking is scheduled next month for the expansion, which will include a new hotel wing with 548 rooms plus 67,000 square feet of convention/concert space. It will include a four-acre pool complex and a 23,000 SF spa, salon and fitness center.

The negotiations were smooth, according to Temecula Mayor Jeff Comerchero. Cooperation has been a hallmark of tribal, city relations for several years, which included an alliance to defeat a proposal for aggregate mine that was near the casino. The city even has declared a citywide celebration of the tribe: Pechanga Pu’eska Mountain Day held every November.
