California Tribe Submits New Casino Plans

Redding Rancheria in Northern California has offered plans for a new casino that would replace its old Win-River Casino. The tribe’s original plans were rejected by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which was then ordered by the courts to take a second look.

California’s Redding Rancheria has submitted plans to the state and federal governments to build a replacement for its Win-River Casino. The new casino would be 1.6 miles away just off Interstate 5.

Plans are for a 140,000 square-foot facility, a hotel with 250 rooms, an event and convention center and retail shopping, according to a public notice filed last week by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Rancheria CEO Tracy Edwards said in a statement: “The Redding Rancheria is extremely excited to start working on the development of our I-5 property located just south of Redding near the Bonnyview exit.”

The tribe has wanted to build on 232 acres for years, but the BIA previously said no. The tribe sued in federal court and the BIA was ordered to give the proposal another look.

The BIA says it is preparing an environmental impact statement for the project and will take public comment during the preparation of that statement.
