Casino Woodbine Workers Hit Picket Line

Canadian casino workers have joined the picket line outside of Casino Woodbine, in Etobicoke, Ontario, City News reported on May 20.

The workers are represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC.) They are joining the picket line in solidarity with 1,000 workers who were locked out by the casino on May 8.

On April 28, the casino filed a “No Board Report” with the Ministry of Labor, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, which allowed it to impose the lockout. The casino says it has been negotiating with the union on the benefits the workers seek.

The casino issued this statement: “On April 27th, we reached an agreement with PSAC’s bargaining committee that included a 16 percent increase in wages over four years, market adjustments in wages for certain roles, a signing bonus of $1,000 for Full Time team members and $500 for Part Time team members, as well as significant enhancements in benefits.”

The members voted May 3 and 4 to reject the offer. Casino Woodbine employs 945 members of PSAC. They include dealers, cashiers and cleaning staff. Picket lines went up May 8.
