Chile’s Undersecretary of Tourism José Luis Uriarte has said no to casino workers urging the government to reopen the Dreams Casino in Puerto Varas and the Marina del Sol in Chillán.
In a statement, Uriarte explained the challenges of protecting health of citizens while trying to reopen the economy. He’s looking at other countries’ strategies, he said. “But for the moment, we are not in a position where we can announce something in relation to making these measures more flexible.”
The government plans a program to assist the tourism industry with $69 million in direct funds that won’t have to be paid back, he said. Those funds will be available beginning this month.
However, the Superintendency of Gambling Casinos in Chile has announced that casinos with open spaces will now able to reopen their doors for business in Phase 2, as long as they have open rooms to offer their services. “Taking into consideration the good results in terms of health measures obtained by the industry since the restart of the operations, the municipal casino operators and licensees can open in Phase 2, as long as they follow the distances already established to use slot machines,” the SCJ announced.
